What kind of training do I need?
We get it, it can be difficult to figure out what course you need to take when it comes to mining. Luckily, our MSHA team is made up of industry experts to help you get it right the first time.
As a quick breakdown: regardless of your experience, miners/non-miners are required to complete training before setting foot on a mining site:
- MSHA Part 46: all new surface aggregate miners are required to complete this 24-hour training.
- MSHA Part 46 Refresher: this 8-hour course is required annually as well.
- MSHA Part 48: new miners who intend on working on metal, non-metal mineral, and surface coal mine operations, must take this 24-hour training.
- MSHA Part 48 Refresher: like Part 46, an 8-hour refresher course is required annually, even for experienced miners.

To be eligible to take the refresher you must have received MSHA training in the past 36 months otherwise you would be required to take the 24 hour new miner course again.
Students that complete the 48 new miner and refresher courses will receive a 5000-23 signed by one of our certified MSHA instructors as a printable PDF.
Students that complete the MSHA part 46 training will receive their certificate as a training record that can be used interchangeably with the 5000-23 for the part 46 training according to the 30 CFR. That training record will need to be signed by the person identified as the competent person on the company's training plan.
Yes, anyone doing work on the mine site is required to have MSHA training.
Part 46 covers aggregate mines. Part 48 covers metal, coal, and aggregate mines.
No. There are two parts to MSHA Part 48. Part 48A is the training required to work underground. Part 48B, which is what we offer, is the surface portion of Part 48 training. This training will cover you to work on the surface of any metal, nonmetal, or coal site or any aggregate site that has underground operations.
